Showering daily can damage your skin
That's why showering every day might not be such a good idea
Showering daily may seem like a must for a fresh and clean feeling, but did you know that your skin doesn't always appreciate it? By showering less often, you give your skin the chance to maintain its natural protective layer.
The power of your skin barrier
Your epidermis naturally has a layer of good bacteria that protects your skin from external damage. Hot water and soap can dry out this layer, making your skin more vulnerable to irritation and dehydration. Taking hot showers every day can even contribute to dry and sensitive skin, or worsen other skin problems.
How often should you shower?
Dermatologists recommend showering three to four times a week. On days when you don't shower, you can simply clean your face, armpits and intimate areas with a washcloth. This way you stay fresh without stressing your skin.
Extra care for sensitive skin
Do you have dry or easily irritated skin? Then choose a mild, perfume-free shower gel and care for your skin after showering with a nourishing, unscented cream. This will keep your skin hydrated and well protected.
What if you want to shower every day?
Sometimes, showering every day is unavoidable, for example if you do a lot of sports or physical work. Fortunately, you can protect your skin with a few simple adjustments:
- Keep the water lukewarm – A temperature of around 37 degrees prevents dehydration.
- Limit your shower time – A short shower of a few minutes is often sufficient.
- Moisturize after every shower – Use a nourishing body lotion to keep your skin supple and hydrated.
The balance between fresh and healthy
How often and how long you shower depends on your skin type and personal preference. But one thing is certain: by taking good care of your skin and not overloading it, you will enjoy a hydrated, healthy and radiant skin for longer!
